Dhanusha, Oct 5: Life in Madhesh has remained largely affected as almost all districts in the Madhesh Province including Dhanusha have been experiencing the incessant rains accompanied by lightning and thunder since Friday night.

The heavy downpour has forced the people to stay indoors. Even those in emergencies are not in a position to risk travelling. The rainfall continues when the people are still in the need to visit their relatives to receive Dashain Tika and blessings from their seniors.

Janakpurdham, the capital of Madhesh Province has become waterlogged. The continuous rains caused the widespread inundation in many residential areas, market places and the areas occupied by the government offices in Janakpurdham sub-metropolis.

According to Mayor Manoj Shah, flooding and inundation are recurring issues for Janakpurdham during each monsoon season and the situation has further become worse this year. The lack of a proper sewage system in the town has caused inundations from the major roadways to the residential areas. “The local residents have complained that rain waters have accumulated in and around their homes,” he said.

“We continue our efforts in coordination with the metropolitan police force to find ways to drain the water,” he said.

As his updates to the RSS, in various areas particularly Ramananda Chowk area, Janaki Temple premises, Rajadevi Temple road, a local vegetable market and hospital have been submerged.

The Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers, District Administration Office, District Police Office, Inland Revenue Office, Post Office and the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) office area have been inundated.

Madhesh Province Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh said various rivers in the Province report the rising waters level and amidst the development of such adversity, the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force have been placed on standby.

He also earlier directed for the prompt and safe evacuation of people from the high-risk areas.
Floods and inundations have put the lives at risk. Administration, security bodies and local levels are required to response in a coordinated way, he said.

According to the province government, the Bagamati River is presently flowing at around 5,500 cusec which is 500 cusec above the danger line. It led to the opening of all gates along the Bagamati Barrage.

The Chief Minister said, ” Due to the gradual opening of gates for Kulekhani Hydropower Centre’s barrage, the water flow in the Bagamati may rise further . That’s why it is essential for the people residing in low laying areas in Rautahat and Sarlahi to remain on high alert to the potential risk.

Police Chief of Madhes Province, Deputy Inspector General Uma Prasad Chaturbedi, said no any huge human casualty was reported in any district of the Province so far.

“Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal and Nepali Army teams are on standby and we have been making locals of risk areas alert,” he added, stating that preparation was underway to repair and maintenance of embankments to control flood and to conduct rescue immediately.

The District Administration Office, Dhanusha, has urged the residents living near rivers to stay alert, adding water-level at Kamala and Ratu rivers is increasing and it might affect coastal areas.

Similarly, the sub-metropolis has requested the citizens not to travel unnecessarily, to keep electric tools in safer places and to postpone school activities for few days. Power supply has become irregular here due to heavy rainfall, said Chairperson of Chhireshwornath municipality-9, Mod Kumar Mahato.

Locals complained of problem in communication service due to obstruction of mobile network at most of the places as well as those involved in animal husbandry have been facing problem to feed their animals.

Most of the shops in Janakpurdham, Mahendranagar, Dhalkebar, Sabaila and Godar have remained closed from Saturday due to incessant rainfall. Chief District Office, Shankar Hari Acharya, said no human casualty was reported in the district so far though some rural areas were inundated till 10: 00 am today following the incessant rainfall for the past around 30 hours.
