Venice, Aug. 29 – The 82nd Venice International Film Festival opened this week, bringing a mix of glamour, politics, and powerful storytelling to the Lido. Running from August 27 to September 6, the festival once again cements its reputation as a launchpad for the global awards season.

Italian director Paolo Sorrentino inaugurated the event with the world premiere of La grazia, a drama starring Toni Servillo that explores moral dilemmas, personal conflict, and political responsibility. The screening drew long applause and set a serious yet celebratory tone for the festival.

This year’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement was awarded to filmmaker Werner Herzog and Hollywood icon Kim Novak, both honored for their lasting contributions to cinema.
On the red carpet, Cate Blanchett earned praise for recycling a glittering Armani Privé gown, while Julia Roberts made headlines in a cardigan featuring director Luca Guadagnino’s face to promote her film After the Hunt. Comedian-turned-serious actor Adam Sandler surprised audiences with his tuxedo appearance at the premiere of Jay Kelly, a Noah Baumbach drama also starring George Clooney.

The festival’s program features several highly anticipated works, including Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Leonardo Di Costanzo’s Elisa, and Franco Maresco’s Bravo Bene!. Among the most talked-about entries is The Voice of Hind Rajab, a Gaza-set drama directed by Kaouther Ben Hania and backed by Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix, spotlighting the tragic true story of a Palestinian child.

With its blend of star power, artistic ambition, and urgent human themes, Venice 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most memorable editions in recent years. The festival concludes September 6 with the awarding of the coveted Golden Lion.
